Below is a depiction of how our morning feeding went… watch and read the following content to adjust your expectations and wrap your head around how to redefine what breastfeeding success means to you.
As you can see… Heidi has decided that she is too busy to wait for my milk to let down to feed. She is expressing her frustration about how “long” it takes to remove my milk by attempting to rip my nipple off and throw it across the room. She does this with such an angelic/ornery/excited look on her face. It’s as if she wants to see if she can LITERALLY remove it and take it with her on her next adventure.
I wanted to post this so you can see that even midwives, IBCLCs, repeat breastfeeders, and business owners have their challenges with breastfeeding. I’m so thankful for these personal challenges, because it means that I have more experience to share with YOU! Although, I would like to keep both of my nips intact in the process.
Breastfeeding does NOT always look like this…
As an IBCLC, I know how to stop this regrettable breastfeeding behavior and continue exclusively breastfeeding. However, I’m choosing not to. My goals have changed as my breastfeeding journey has unfolded, and my new goal is to move towards a mostly breastmilk/pumping/night-feeding plan. Say what you will about that. The point is…. Not everyone’s breastfeeding goal has to be ALL breastmilk from ONLY the breast ALL the time. An IBCLC should be able to help you set realistic breastfeeding expectations and achieve that goal. I am currently taking on a project to help women with this issue. Get rid of the guilt. Adjust those expectations. Keep your nipples. Feed your baby.
